Estonia has a modern market economy and boasts one of the highest per capita incomes in central Europe and the Baltic States. It has strong electronics and telecommunications sectors, as well as strong trade links with its neighbouring countries.
It is well known for its balanced budget, its almost complete lack of public debt, its simple and transparent tax system and its flexible labour market. The aim is to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles: Estonia is the world’s first digital country, with only three administrative procedures requiring you to appear in person (marriage, divorce and real estate transactions).
The government fosters increased productivity by concentrating its efforts on innovations that focus on new technology companies and e-commerce. The world’s first e-residence scheme, which has a goal of reaching 10 million “inhabitants” by 2025, was launched in this context.

We took the opportunity to visit Helsinki (Finland) on the last day to learn first-hand how the welfare state model evolved and how the commitment to research and innovation as a country strategy has progressed since the 2007 trip.
